Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically grow into the very back of the mouth between the ages of 15 and 20. At Prime Dental Group, we recommend that people in this age range visit us for a consultation as a precaution. Wisdom teeth often grow in incorrectly and can cause serious problems in your mouth later on. While wisdom teeth removal is often associated with pain or discomfort, the process is usually simple and less painful than other issues that can occur if the teeth are not removed. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your wisdom teeth, please contact us today to schedule a free consultation and x-rays! Together, we will develop a treatment plan that works for you.
Why Is Removal Needed?
While it is possible for wisdom teeth to grow in and function properly, this is not usually the case. Because wisdom teeth grow in years after the other molars are in place, there is often not enough space for the teeth to come in. This causes the wisdom teeth to become impacted, meaning they grow at an angle or remain trapped in the jaw under the gum. It is extremely important to catch wisdom teeth before they become impacted in order to avoid painful symptoms of issues, including:
- Cysts
- Pain and swelling
- Tooth decay
- Bacteria growth
- Infected gums
- Misalignment of other teeth
Removal Process
If you are concerned that your wisdom teeth may be coming in, the first step is making an appointment for a free consultation and x-rays. If your wisdom teeth look like they may become impacted or cause discomfort, we will recommend that you schedule an appointment for removal as soon as possible. Although the thought of tooth removal makes many patients nervous, the procedure is actually nothing to fear and we do our best to make sure you are comfortable. We offer conscious sedation or nitrous for wisdom teeth extraction. Please keep in mind that electing conscious sedation does require you to have a friend or family member drive you home after the procedure. After your procedure, we will give you clear instructions for cleaning and caring for your gums during the healing process. You will also be prescribed medication to alleviate any pain or discomfort you may experience.
